You light a candle expecting the room to gradually fill with fragrance, yet the scent seems far more subtle than you expected. Perhaps it seemed stronger when you first removed the lid, or perhaps you're wondering whether the candle contains enough fragrance at all.

It's an understandable question, but the strength of a candle isn't determined by a single ingredient or a single moment.

Instead, it depends on a carefully balanced relationship between the wax, the wick, the fragrance, the environment in which the candle is being burned and even the way our own sense of smell works.

As a candle maker, these are the details I think about long before a candle is ever lit. Every decision, from selecting the wax and wick to testing the finished formulation, influences how fragrance is eventually released into your home.

I'll explain why some candles appear stronger than others, why adding more fragrance isn't the answer many people assume it is and the factors that really determine how a candle performs.

Why More Fragrance Doesn't Mean a Stronger Candle

One of the biggest misconceptions in candle making is that a stronger candle simply contains more fragrance.

It sounds logical. If a candle doesn't smell particularly strong, surely the solution is to add more fragrance oil?

In reality, that's not how candle making works.

Every candle is carefully formulated so that the wax, wick and fragrance work together as a balanced system. Change one element too much and the others are affected.

Across the candle industry, a fragrance load of between 8% and 10% is generally considered the optimum range. At Aromachology Studios, I formulate my candles using a 10% fragrance load, which sits within the guidelines set by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).

It might seem logical that adding even more fragrance would produce a stronger smelling candle, but that isn't how candle making works. Once the correct balance has been exceeded, the additional fragrance can begin to affect how efficiently the candle burns.

The wick has to generate enough heat to melt the wax and release the fragrance into the air. When too much fragrance has been added, that balance can begin to break down. The flame may struggle to generate enough heat, the wick may not burn as efficiently and the fragrance may actually become less effective rather than more noticeable.

A well performing candle isn't created by pushing one ingredient to its limit.

It's created by ensuring every component works in harmony.

For me, that balance is established long before a candle reaches someone's home. Every formulation is carefully developed and extensively burn tested to ensure the wax, wick and fragrance complement one another, creating a candle that burns cleanly while releasing fragrance consistently throughout its life.

What Does a "Strong" Candle Actually Mean?

When people describe a candle as "strong", they often mean different things.

Some are referring to the fragrance they notice before the candle has even been lit. Others are talking about how much fragrance fills the room while the candle is burning.

As candle makers, we describe these as cold throw and hot throw.

Cold Throw

Cold throw is the fragrance you notice when the candle is unlit.

This is often your first impression of a candle when you remove the lid or lift it from its box.

A strong cold throw doesn't necessarily mean the candle will fill a room once it's burning, just as a subtle cold throw doesn't automatically mean the candle will perform poorly.

The type of wax also plays an important role. I use a blend of rapeseed and coconut wax because, alongside its sustainability credentials and clean burn, it holds fragrance exceptionally well, helping to create an impressive cold throw before the candle is even lit. Hot Throw

Hot throw describes the fragrance released while the candle is burning.

As the flame melts the wax, fragrance molecules are gradually released into the surrounding air.

This is where every part of the candle begins working together.

The wax must melt consistently.

The wick must generate the correct amount of heat.

The fragrance has to be compatible with the wax.

Even the size of the melt pool influences how efficiently fragrance is released.

A candle with excellent hot throw isn't necessarily the one containing the most fragrance. It's the one where every element has been carefully balanced to work together.

Why You May Stop Noticing the Fragrance

One of the most fascinating aspects of our sense of smell is that our brain is designed to stop noticing familiar scents after a period of time. This process, known as olfactory adaptation, helps prevent our senses from becoming overwhelmed by smells that remain constant in our environment.

It's the reason you quickly stop noticing your own perfume or aftershave, even though other people can still smell it.

The same thing can happen when burning a candle.

After twenty or thirty minutes, you may feel as though the fragrance has faded, when in reality your brain has simply begun filtering it into the background.

This doesn't mean the candle has stopped releasing fragrance.

It often means your sense of smell has adapted to it.

Understanding this helps explain why someone entering the room may immediately notice the fragrance while you've become almost unaware of it.

Your Environment Influences Fragrance More Than You Might Realise

A candle never burns in exactly the same conditions twice.

The size of the room, ceiling height, ventilation and even what's happening elsewhere in your home all influence how fragrance travels through the air.

A candle that fills a cosy reading nook with fragrance may seem much more subtle in a large, open plan living space. Likewise, an open window, extractor fan or strong cooking aromas can all compete with the fragrance you're trying to enjoy.

This is why candle makers test their formulations under controlled conditions. It allows us to understand how the candle performs before it reaches your home, even though we know every customer will burn it in a slightly different environment.

Rather than expecting every candle to behave identically in every room, it's more helpful to think of fragrance as something that interacts with the space around it. Sometimes small changes, such as moving the candle to a smaller room or away from an open window, can noticeably improve how the fragrance is experienced.

Why Burn Time Matters

One of the most common reasons a candle may seem less fragrant than expected has nothing to do with the formulation itself. Quite simply, it may not have been burning for long enough.

As a candle burns, the flame gradually melts the surrounding wax, creating what is known as the melt pool. It is from this pool of liquid wax that fragrance is released into the air.

If the candle is extinguished before enough wax has melted, less fragrance is able to evaporate, making the scent appear weaker than it really is.

The first burn is particularly important because it establishes the candle's wax memory. Allowing the melt pool to develop almost to the edges of the vessel helps encourage a more even burn during future use, enabling the candle to continue releasing fragrance consistently throughout its life.

The Wick Does Much More Than Create a Flame

It's easy to think of the wick as simply the part of the candle you light.

In reality, the wick is responsible for far more than producing a flame.

Its job is to draw liquid wax upwards where it combines with oxygen and burns. At the same time, it must generate enough heat to create a consistent melt pool, allowing fragrance to evaporate steadily into the surrounding air.

If the wick is too small, it may struggle to generate sufficient heat, producing a weaker hot throw. If it's too large, the candle may burn too quickly, become excessively hot or consume fragrance faster than intended.

Choosing the correct wick is therefore one of the most important parts of developing a candle.

It's also why changing the amount of fragrance within a candle isn't as simple as adding a little more. Every adjustment affects the relationship between the wax, the wick and the flame, meaning the entire formulation must be tested again to ensure everything continues working together as intended.

The Wax Plays an Important Role Too

Wax isn't simply something that holds the fragrance.

It influences how the candle burns, how the fragrance is retained and how it is eventually released into your home.

Different waxes have different characteristics, which is why changing from one wax to another isn't simply a case of swapping ingredients. The wick may need to change, burn times may alter and fragrance performance can behave very differently.

Not Every Fragrance Behaves in the Same Way

One of the biggest misconceptions about candle making is that every fragrance behaves similarly once it has been blended into wax.

Some fragrance compositions naturally fill a room more quickly, while others reveal themselves more gently over time. Certain ingredients are naturally lighter and more delicate, whilst others are richer and more diffusive.

This doesn't necessarily make one fragrance better than another. It simply reflects the characteristics of the individual ingredients that make up the fragrance itself.

The type of fragrance being used also influences how the candle is formulated. Different fragrance oils interact with wax in different ways, which is why every new fragrance requires its own testing and refinement before becoming part of a finished candle.

Why Cure Time Matters

Once a candle has been poured, it isn't immediately ready to burn.

Before it reaches you, the wax and fragrance need time to fully bind together in a process known as curing.

During this period, the fragrance becomes more evenly distributed throughout the wax, helping the candle achieve its intended performance once it is lit.

Burning a candle before it has cured properly can affect both its hot throw and overall burn quality.

It's another reminder that creating a well performing candle isn't about rushing the process. Every stage, from formulation and pouring to curing and burn testing, contributes to the finished result.

Every Candle Is Burn Tested Before It Reaches My Collection

Long before a candle appears on my website, I've already spent many hours watching it burn.

I'm not simply checking that it stays alight.

I'm observing how quickly the melt pool develops, how the flame behaves, whether the wick curls naturally, how the fragrance develops as the candle burns and whether every component continues working together as intended.

Even small changes to the wax, wick or fragrance can alter the way a candle performs, which is why every formulation is carefully evaluated before becoming part of the Aromachology Studios collection.
